Reading:
As we can learn about words by checking their context, so we can learn about the content of an entire book by looking at the “wrapping” or the words, images, quotes etc. in which it is contextualized. This can be considered a form of skimming, or looking around the edges (or at the “top” level).
Below is an introduction to The Desert and the Sea: 977 Days Captive on the Somali Pirate Coast, by Michael Scott Moore. It includes the front and back cover, the inside cover and introductory pages, and the Prologue.
While we’re doing this, we’ll also come across a lot of vocabulary words we can also attempt to discern, or figure out, from their context.
